About Leo Mangum

Leo Allan Mangum was born May 24, 1896, in Durham, North Carolina, and broke into pro ball in 1920 after Pittsburgh outfielder George "Possum" Whitted signed him; he threw a no-hitter in his very first professional start, for Albany against Pittsfield. A right-hander, he reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox (1924-25), moved to the New York Giants (1928), and settled in with the Boston Braves (1933-35), finishing 11-10 with a 5.37 ERA and 78 strikeouts over 85 career appearances, mostly in relief. Nicknamed "Banjo Mangum" for his hobby of playing the banjo (also guitar and ukulele) between starts, and sometimes called "Blackie" for his dark hair, he spent the bulk of his 19 pro seasons starring in the minors, winning 210 games against 194 losses, including a 21-7 mark for Buffalo in 1927. His best big-league season came with the 1933 Braves, when he went 4-3 with a 3.32 ERA and, on June 27, shut out the Cardinals on six hits without a walk in a 1-0 win, prompting manager Bill McKechnie to praise his control. Mangum died July 9, 1974, in Lima, Ohio.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Leo Mangum card?

It is card #162 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Leo Mangum with the Boston Braves.

Is the 1933 Goudey Leo Mangum #162 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
