1933 Goudey #50 Ed Brandt
Low number: this card was printed on press sheets 1-2 (#1-40 plus #45-52), which saw shorter distribution than the rest of the 1933 run — low numbers are noticeably scarcer.

About Ed Brandt
Edward Arthur "Dutch" Brandt (1905-1944) was a hard-luck left-handed pitcher who anchored the Boston Braves' rotation through the Depression years. A Spokane, Washington native, he signed with the Seattle Indians of the Pacific Coast League as a teenager, and the Braves purchased his contract in 1927 for $20,000; he debuted in the majors on April 15, 1928. From 1931 through 1934 Brandt was among the National League's elite southpaws, leading a weak-hitting Boston club in innings pitched each season and averaging 17 wins a year despite pitching for second-division teams - a run that earned him a spot on Babe Ruth's 1931 All-American team and a tenth-place MVP finish. His signature season was 1933, the very year this card was issued: he went 18-14 with a sharp 2.60 ERA and 23 complete games, and was also one of the league's best-hitting pitchers, batting .309. He finished his career (1928-1938, also with Brooklyn and Pittsburgh) with 121 wins and a 3.86 ERA over 877 strikeouts. Brandt died in 1944 at age 39 in his hometown, struck by a car while discussing a minor traffic accident.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Ed Brandt card?
It is card #50 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Ed Brandt with the Boston Braves.
Is the 1933 Goudey Ed Brandt #50 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
