About Rabbit Maranville
Walter James Vincent "Rabbit" Maranville turned pro in 1911 with New Bedford of the New England League before the Boston Braves bought his contract in 1912. A wiry, 5-foot-5 shortstop, he anchored Boston's "Miracle Braves" infield alongside second baseman Johnny Evers during their stunning 1914 pennant run and four-game World Series sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics, finishing runner-up in that year's MVP (Chalmers Award) voting. Over 23 major-league seasons with the Braves (1912-1920, 1929-1933, 1935), Pirates, Cubs, Robins, and Cardinals, he batted .258 with 2,605 hits, 28 home runs, and 884 RBI, and set a career record for putouts by a shortstop. His glove, not his bat, made him famous: he popularized the nonchalant "vest-pocket catch" of infield pop-ups. Nicknamed "Rabbit" for the way he would hop and bound around the field, he doubled as one of baseball's great clowns, entertaining crowds with antics while still holding down a pennant contender into his forties; he also managed the Cubs in 1925. Still Boston's regular shortstop when this 1933 Goudey card appeared, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1954, dying just weeks after his election was announced.
