About Jess Petty
Jesse "the Silver Fox" Petty broke into pro ball in 1915 with the San Antonio Bronchos, reportedly signed in exchange for a season ticket, and was soon drafted by Cleveland for $1,200. After seasoning with New Orleans, Waco, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis (where he won 29 games in 1924), the left-hander reached the majors for good with Cleveland in 1921 and became a regular with the Brooklyn Robins from 1925-1928, later pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs through 1930. His signature moment came on Opening Day 1926, when he stepped in for an ailing Dazzy Vance and shut out the Giants on a one-hitter, 1-0; he went on to win 17 games that year with a 2.84 ERA, third-best in the National League, and followed with 13 wins and a 2.98 ERA in 1927. Over seven big-league seasons he finished 67-78 with a 3.68 ERA and 407 strikeouts. Rather than fading after his 1930 release, Petty found a second act in the high minors, winning 15 games for Los Angeles in 1931 before joining the Minneapolis Millers, for whom he won 16, 18, and 19 games in 1932-1934 — the form he was in when Goudey pictured him with Minneapolis on this 1933 card. He finished with 186 minor-league victories over 14 seasons and later managed at Knoxville and Hopkinsville before his death in 1971.
