Tris Speaker - 1933 Goudey #89
1933 Goudey #89 Tris Speaker

About Tris Speaker
Tristram Edgar "Tris" Speaker (1888-1958) ranks among the greatest outfielders the game has produced. Signed by Cleburne of the Texas League in 1906, he struggled in a brief 1907 trial with the Boston Red Sox before returning in 1909 to begin a 22-year career, playing Boston (1909-15), Cleveland (1916-26), Washington (1927), and Philadelphia (1928). Nicknamed "The Grey Eagle," he played center field so shallow he functioned almost as a fifth infielder, leading the American League seven times in putouts and six in double plays -- records that still stand at the position. A career .345 hitter, sixth all-time, he totaled 3,514 hits and set the still-unbroken major-league record of 792 doubles. He won World Series titles with Boston in 1912 and 1915, then as Cleveland's player-manager led the Indians past Brooklyn for the 1920 championship, a season marked by teammate Ray Chapman's fatal beaning. His 1912 Chalmers Award (MVP) season featured a .383 average. After being cleared by Commissioner Landis of 1919 game-fixing allegations but resigning under league pressure, Speaker closed his playing days with Washington and Philadelphia. By 1933, the card's issue year, he was part-owner and briefly manager of the Kansas City Blues of the American Association before being replaced in that post by May while staying on as club secretary. He entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937, part of its second induction class.
