1933 Goudey #132 Jim Elliott

About Jim Elliott
James Thomas "Jumbo" Elliott, a big left-hander at roughly 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds — the likely source of his nickname — broke into pro ball with Terre Haute of the Class B Three-I League in 1922 before debuting in the majors with the St. Louis Browns on April 21, 1923. He pitched for the Brooklyn Robins (1925, 1927-1930) before being dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he had his finest season in 1931: a 19-14 record with a 4.27 ERA that tied him for the National League lead in wins. He closed his ten-season big-league career with the Phillies and Boston Braves in 1934, finishing 63-74 with a 4.24 ERA and 453 strikeouts over 252 games. His 1933 Goudey card, issued the year after his last big campaign, captures him late in a career spent mostly with second-division National League clubs. After baseball, Elliott settled in Terre Haute, Indiana, working as a Vigo County deputy sheriff and, in 1968, running unsuccessfully for county sheriff against basketball Hall-of-Famer Clyde Lovellette. He died in Terre Haute on January 7, 1970.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Jim Elliott card?
It is card #132 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Jim Elliott with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Is the 1933 Goudey Jim Elliott #132 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
