About Fred Lindstrom
Frederick Charles Lindstrom was born November 21, 1905, in Chicago. A Giants scout signed him after he ripped four extra-base hits in a high school game; he was farmed to Toledo of the American Association at just 16 before New York purchased him in September 1923. Lindstrom debuted with the Giants in 1924 as an 18-year-old third baseman and, that October, became the youngest player ever to appear in a World Series -- a record that still stands. In Game 7 against Washington, two ground balls hit pebbles and bounced over his head, costing New York the title; manager John McGraw nonetheless built his infield around him for the rest of the decade. Lindstrom hit .300 or better in seven straight seasons (1925-31), leading the National League in hits with 231 in both 1928 and 1930, when he also batted .379. Traded to Pittsburgh before the 1933 season, he shifted to the outfield and hit .310 with 39 doubles, flanking Paul and Lloyd Waner. He finished his 13-year career (1924-36, also with the Cubs and Dodgers) with a .311 average, 1,747 hits, 103 home runs and 779 RBI. The Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1976, a selection that remains debated among historians given his relatively modest career length.
