About Waite Hoyt
Waite Hoyt broke in as a teenage phenom nicknamed "Schoolboy," signing an option contract with the New York Giants at age 15 before making his major-league debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1919. Traded to the Yankees in 1921, the right-hander became the ace of the Ruth-and-Gehrig dynasty, leading the American League with 22 wins in 1927 during New York's record-setting 110-win championship season. Over 21 big-league seasons (1919-1938) with the Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers, Athletics, Dodgers, Giants and Pirates, Hoyt went 237-182 with a 3.59 ERA and 1,206 strikeouts. He built a reputation as one of the game's great "money pitchers," appearing in seven World Series and compiling a 6-4 record with a 1.83 ERA - his six Series wins stood as a career record. By 1933 he had landed with Pittsburgh, where on September 12 he beat Brooklyn for career win number 200. Sportswriters also dubbed him the "Merry Mortician" for his offseason work in the funeral trade. After retiring in 1938, Hoyt became the popular longtime radio voice of the Cincinnati Reds for 24 years, prized for his storytelling. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1969.
