About Bing Miller
Edmund John "Bing" Miller was born August 30, 1894, on a farm near Urbana, Iowa. His brother Eugene nicknamed him "Bing" after a comic-strip character, "George Washington Bings," from the local Vinton Eagle newspaper. Miller broke in with the Vinton Cinders as a teenager, worked his way up through Clinton and Little Rock, and reached the majors as an outfielder with the Washington Senators in 1921 before starring for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics (1922-26, 1928-33), with a stint on the St. Louis Browns (1926-27) and closing his career with the Boston Red Sox (1935-36). A right fielder with a sweet, consistent bat, Miller hit .300 or better eight times and finished a 16-year career with a .311 average, 1,934 hits, 116 home runs, and 993 RBI. He was a key contributor to Philadelphia's three straight AL pennants (1929-31) and back-to-back World Series titles, batting .368 in the 1929 Fall Classic and delivering the signature moment of his career: a two-out, ninth-inning walk-off double in Game 5 that clinched the championship over the Cubs. In 1930 he drove in a career-high 100 runs as the A's beat the Cardinals for a second straight title. Late in his career he became one of the American League's top pinch hitters, leading the circuit with 13 pinch hits in 1935, and at 41 was the oldest player in the majors in his final season. He later coached for the Red Sox, Tigers, White Sox, and Athletics, and died in 1966 following a car accident on his way home from a Phillies game.
