About Dib Williams

Edwin Dibrell "Dib" Williams (b. January 19, 1910, Greenbrier, Arkansas; d. April 2, 1992) left Hendrix College in January 1929 to sign with the Little Rock Travelers, and Connie Mack brought him up to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1930 as a rookie backup infielder behind second baseman Max Bishop on Mack's World Series-winning club. A right-handed-hitting infielder equally at home at second or short, Williams became a fixture in the pennant-winning A's infield of the early 1930s. His signature moment came in the 1931 World Series against St. Louis: with Mack under pressure to bench him for veteran Joe Boley, Williams instead played every inning at shortstop across all seven games, batted .320 (third on the club behind Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons), and fielded errorlessly, drawing praise from Giants manager John McGraw as "steady as a rock." His nickname, "Dib," derived from his middle name, Dibrell. In 1933, the season pictured on this card, Williams had his best all-around year, setting career highs with a .289 average, 11 home runs, 73 RBI, and 115 games. He remained with the Athletics through 1934 before finishing his six-year major-league career with the Boston Red Sox in 1935, compiling a .267 average with 29 home runs and 201 RBI over 475 games. Williams played and managed in the minors into the late 1940s before returning home to Arkansas, where he ran the Greenbrier Egg Company.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Dib Williams card?

It is card #82 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Dib Williams with the Philadelphia Athletics.

Is the 1933 Goudey Dib Williams #82 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
