About Mickey Cochrane

Gordon "Mickey" Cochrane (1903-1962) broke in with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1925 after batting .333 for Portland in the Pacific Coast League, and quickly became the game's premier catcher. Over 13 big-league seasons (Athletics, 1925-1933; Detroit Tigers player-manager, 1934-1937) he hit .320 lifetime with 119 home runs and a .419 on-base percentage, catching at least 110 games in each of his first 11 seasons. He won American League MVP honors in 1928 and 1934, and helped Connie Mack's Athletics to three straight pennants (1929-1931) and back-to-back World Series titles in 1929 and 1930, prized above all for how he handled a pitching staff, notably steering Lefty Grove through his dominant seasons. His nickname came from scout Tom Turner, who mistakenly assumed the Massachusetts-born Cochrane was Irish; he actually preferred "Mike" in private. As player-manager he led Detroit to the 1934 and 1935 pennants and the 1935 World Series championship, the franchise's first, before a 1937 beaning by Yankees pitcher Bump Hadley nearly killed him and ended his playing career. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1947, the first catcher chosen by the BBWAA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Mickey Cochrane card?

It is card #76 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Mickey Cochrane with the Philadelphia Athletics.

Is the 1933 Goudey Mickey Cochrane #76 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
