About Pete Jablonowski
Peter William Jablonowski was born in 1904 in Terryville, Connecticut, to Polish immigrant parents, and pitched at the University of Michigan before signing with Waterbury of the Eastern League in 1926. A right-hander, he broke into the majors with Cincinnati in 1927 and went on to pitch for Cleveland, Boston, the Yankees (his 1933 card team, though he made only one brief relief appearance for New York that season), Washington, the White Sox, and the Browns across 1927-1945, finishing 57-66 with a 4.30 ERA and 420 strikeouts. In early 1934 he legally changed his surname from Jablonowski to Appleton -- jablon being Polish for "apple" -- and under that name posted his career-best 1936 season for Washington, going 14-9 with a 3.53 ERA. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before returning to pitch his final game in 1945, then managed and scouted in the minors for another two decades.
