About Bill Dickey

Born June 6, 1907, in Bastrop, Louisiana (d. 1993), Bill Dickey was signed by the Little Rock Travelers after he filled in behind the plate in a Hot Springs semipro game in 1924, and he broke into the majors with the New York Yankees on August 15, 1928. Over 17 seasons as New York's catcher (1928-1943, 1946), the left-handed hitter batted .313 with 202 home runs and 1,209 RBI, topping .300 in eleven seasons; his best year came in 1937, when he hit .332 with career highs of 29 homers and 133 RBI, including grand slams on back-to-back days that August. He made 11 All-Star teams, including the very first All-Star Game in 1933, and helped the Yankees to eight pennants and seven World Series titles (1932, 1936-1939, 1941, 1943). His hard-nosed reputation was cemented on July 4, 1932, when he broke Carl Reynolds' jaw with one punch after a violent home-plate collision, drawing a 30-game suspension. Dickey managed the Yankees in 1946-47 and later tutored Yogi Berra, whom he predicted would become the league's best catcher. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Bill Dickey card?

It is card #19 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Bill Dickey with the New York Yankees.

Is the 1933 Goudey Bill Dickey #19 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
