About Danny MacFayden
Danny MacFayden was a right-handed pitcher who went straight from Boston's semipro Twilight League to the major leagues, signed by Red Sox owner Bob Quinn and debuting on August 25, 1926, without a day in the minors. He pitched for Boston (1926-32), the Yankees (1932-35), Cincinnati, the Braves, Pittsburgh, and Washington across 17 seasons, finishing 132-159 with a 3.96 ERA and 797 strikeouts in 2,706 innings. He led the American League with four shutouts in 1929 and posted his best years with the Braves in 1936-38, going 17-13 with a 2.87 ERA in the first of them. Known for pitching in eyeglasses -- the first American League hurler to do so -- he was nicknamed "Deacon Danny" and "Dismal Danny" for his dour, serious demeanor. On the 1933 Yankees card, he was coming off a rough 3-2, 5.88 ERA season as New York finished behind the pennant-winning Senators. He later coached baseball at Bowdoin College for 24 years.
