About Joe Judge

Joseph Ignatius Judge (born May 25, 1894, in Brooklyn, NY; died March 11, 1963) was a slick-fielding left-handed first baseman who broke in with the Boston Red Sox in 1915 after a mail carrier named Bud Hannah talked him into moving off the infield dirt and onto first base. Clark Griffith purchased him from Buffalo for $500 in 1915, and Judge became Washington's regular first baseman from 1916 through 1932, batting over .290 in eleven straight seasons beginning in 1920, when he hit a career-high .333. In 1924 he helped the Senators to their only Washington World Series title, batting .324 with 38 doubles in the regular season and then .385 (10-for-26) with four walks against the Giants in the Series. Defensively he set American League career records at first base for games, putouts, assists, and double plays, and his .993 fielding percentage stood as a league mark for roughly thirty years; Connie Mack called him "one of the smartest first basemen the American League has ever seen." Displaced by Joe Kuhel in Washington, Judge played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1933 - his card team here - before closing his career with the Boston Red Sox in 1934, finishing with a .298 average, 2,352 hits, and 1,034 RBI over 20 seasons. No specific on-field nickname for Judge is documented in standard sources.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Joe Judge card?

It is card #155 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Joe Judge with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Is the 1933 Goudey Joe Judge #155 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
