About Bud Clancy
John William "Bud" Clancy was a left-handed-hitting first baseman who signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1923 and reached the majors in 1924, becoming Chicago's regular first baseman through the late 1920s. His best season came in 1927, when he hit .300 with a .337 on-base mark over 130 games. Over parts of ten big-league seasons with the White Sox (1924-1930), Brooklyn Dodgers (1932), and Philadelphia Phillies (1934), Clancy batted .281 with 504 hits, 12 home runs, and 198 RBI in 522 games. He earned a lasting footnote in the record book on April 27, 1930, against the St. Louis Browns, when he played a full nine innings at first base without recording a single putout, assist, or error - the first American League first baseman to do so since 1891. After his playing days wound down, Clancy managed and played in the minor leagues into the early 1940s before leaving the game. His 1933 Goudey card, issued the year he was playing for Jersey City in the International League after his brief National League stint with Brooklyn, captures him as part of the set's landmark Depression-era rookie-heavy checklist.
