Forest Glenn "Buckshot" Wright (born February 6, 1901, in Archie, Missouri; died 1984) left the University of Missouri after his sophomore year to sign with the Kansas City Blues in 1921, reaching the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1924. A big, powerful-armed shortstop, he set a major-league record with 601 assists that season and by 1925 was drawing comparisons to Honus Wagner, batting .308 with 121 RBI and finishing fourth in MVP voting. On May 7, 1925, he turned an unassisted triple play against St. Louis, gloving a Jim Bottomley liner, stepping on second to double off Jimmy Cooney, then tagging Rogers Hornsby. His nickname "Buckshot" referred to his throwing arm — hard but scattershot, as he put it: "I could throw hard but no one could tell where." Traded to Brooklyn in December 1928, he tore his shoulder tendons that offseason in a handball accident, needing surgery, yet mounted a remarkable 1930 comeback (.321, a shortstop-record 22 homers, 126 RBI). By the Dodgers' 1933 season, injuries had caught up with him; he played just 71 games, batting .255, and Brooklyn released him that winter. He finished with a .294 career average, 94 home runs, and 723 RBI over 11 big-league seasons, later scouting for the Boston Red Sox.
