About Jack Quinn
Born Johannes Pajkos in Stefurov, then part of Austria-Hungary (now Slovakia), Jack Quinn worked as a Pennsylvania coal-breaker boy before a chance sandlot outing got him signed to pro ball; he pitched in the minors from 1903 to 1908 before reaching the majors in 1909 with the New York Highlanders. Over 23 major-league seasons - with the Yankees, Boston Braves, Baltimore Terrapins, Chicago White Sox, Red Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds - the right-hander went 247-218 with a 3.29 ERA and 1,329 strikeouts, winning World Series titles with Connie Mack's Athletics in 1929 and 1930. Nicknamed the "Ageless Wonder," Quinn relied on a "dry spitter" thrown with the aid of chewing gum rather than saliva, a pitch he was permitted to keep throwing under the spitball's 1920 grandfather clause. He set a string of longevity records - oldest pitcher to win a game (a mark that stood until Jamie Moyer in 2012) and oldest player to hit a home run, at 46 in 1930. By 1933, pitching for Brooklyn and finishing the year with Cincinnati, Quinn was approaching age 50; he made his final major-league appearance that July before his release, closing out one of the sport's most improbable careers.
