About Herb Pennock
Herbert Jefferis Pennock, "the Squire of Kennett Square" (named for his Pennsylvania hometown, where he farmed and raised hounds), was a left-handed pitcher signed by Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics at seventeen after he struck out nineteen batters for Cedarcroft Boarding School. He debuted on May 14, 1912, and over 22 big-league seasons pitched for the Athletics (1912-1914), Boston Red Sox (1915-1922), New York Yankees (1923-1933), and Red Sox again (1934), finishing 240-162 with a 3.60 ERA and 1,227 strikeouts. Acquired by New York before 1923, he anchored the Yankees' rotation, leading the American League in winning percentage that year (19-6) and beating the Giants in that fall's World Series to help clinch the franchise's first championship. He was virtually unbeatable in October, posting a perfect 5-0 record across five World Series (1914, 1923, 1926, 1927, 1932) and four Yankees titles. By 1933, working mainly in relief, he closed out his Yankees career; New York released him after the season. Pennock later served as Philadelphia Phillies general manager until his death in 1948, the same year he was posthumously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
