1933 Goudey #157 Sam Byrd

About Sam Byrd
Samuel Dewey Byrd broke into the majors with the New York Yankees in 1929, spending six seasons (1929-1934) as a reserve outfielder best known for entering games as a late-inning defensive replacement and pinch runner for an aging Babe Ruth - a role that earned him the enduring nickname "Babe Ruth's Legs." He was part of the Yankees' 1932 World Series championship team, appearing in the Series as a substitute for Ruth. Byrd finished his big-league career with the Cincinnati Reds (1935-1936), batting .274 with 38 home runs and 220 RBIs over 745 games. He turned professional golfer in November 1933 and, after leaving baseball for good in 1937, became one of the sport's top players, winning six PGA Tour events between 1942 and 1945 and finishing third at the 1941 Masters Tournament. Byrd remains the only man to have played in both a World Series and the Masters, a distinction that stands as his most singular baseball-and-golf legacy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Sam Byrd card?
It is card #157 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Sam Byrd with the New York Yankees.
Is the 1933 Goudey Sam Byrd #157 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
