About George Pipgras
George Pipgras was a right-handed pitcher born December 20, 1899, in Ida Grove, Iowa. Discovered pitching semipro ball in Minnesota, he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1922 and was traded to the New York Yankees, debuting with the club in 1923. He anchored the Yankees' rotation from 1927-1932, then closed his career with the Red Sox (1933-1935), finishing 102-73 with a 4.09 ERA and 714 strikeouts over 11 seasons. He led the American League in wins in 1928 (24-13) and posted a league-best 3.20 ERA in 1927. Part of four Yankees championship teams (1923, 1927, 1928, 1932), he went 3-0 in his World Series starts, including a four-hitter that clinched the 1928 Series over St. Louis. Known as "The Danish Viking," he was on the mound in the 1932 Series opener during Babe Ruth's famous "called shot" game. A broken arm suffered pitching against Detroit in 1933 hastened his retirement; he later became an American League umpire (1938-1946), working the 1944 World Series.
