About Red Lucas
Charles Fred "Red" Lucas was born April 28, 1902, in Columbia, Tennessee, and died July 9, 1986, in Nashville. He broke into pro ball in 1920 with Bartow of the Class D Florida State League, working up through the low minors and Nashville of the Southern Association before debuting in the majors with the New York Giants on April 19, 1923. The right-hander passed through the Boston Braves before settling in with the Cincinnati Reds — the team on his 1933 Goudey card — and finished his 16-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1938. Over 396 games he went 157-135 with a 3.72 ERA and 602 strikeouts, leading the NL in complete games in 1929, 1931, and 1932, and placing 11th and 6th in NL MVP voting in 1927 and 1929. A celebrated control artist, Lucas was equally famous as a hitting pitcher, batting .281 for his career and setting the major-league record for career pinch-hits by a pitcher. Cincinnati sportswriter Colonel Bob Newhall dubbed him "The Nashville Narcissus." He was later inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
