About Clyde Manion
Clyde "Pete" Manion, born October 30, 1896, in Big River, Missouri, was a right-handed-hitting catcher who broke into the majors with the Detroit Tigers on May 5, 1920. He spent eight seasons in Detroit (1920-1924, 1926-1927) as the primary backup behind starting catcher Johnny Bassler, then moved on to the St. Louis Browns (1928-1930) before finishing his big-league career with the Cincinnati Reds (1932-1934), the club depicted on his 1933 Goudey card. Over 13 major-league seasons Manion appeared in 477 games - 401 of them behind the plate - batting .218 with 250 hits, 3 home runs, and 112 RBI; in his best offensive showing anywhere, he hit .353 in 138 games for Milwaukee of the American Association in 1931 before returning to the majors with Cincinnati the following year. A dependable defensive catcher rather than an offensive force, he served as a semi-regular for the Reds in 1933. After his playing career ended in 1934, Manion settled in the Detroit area and worked as a life insurance agent for Equitable Life. He died of a heart attack in September 1967 at his home in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, at age 70.
