About Flint Rhem

Charles Flint "Shad" Rhem was a right-handed pitcher who spent 12 major-league seasons (1924-1936), primarily with the St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Philadelphia Phillies in 1932, the club shown on his 1933 Goudey card. Born in Rhems, South Carolina, he starred at Clemson, where he earned the nickname "Big Smoky," then signed with St. Louis in 1924 and reached the majors that September after a no-hit performance in the minors. His finest season came in 1926, when he tied for the National League lead with 20 wins (20-7, 3.21 ERA over 258 innings) as the Cardinals won their first World Series title; he also pitched in the 1928, 1930, and 1931 Fall Classics, all Cardinals pennant years. He finished with 105 wins, 97 losses, and a 4.20 ERA. Rhem's career is best remembered for a bizarre September 1930 episode in which he claimed armed men had kidnapped him and forced him to drink liquor before a game against Brooklyn - a tale tied to chronic drinking problems that sportswriters said cost him greater stardom. Teammates nicknamed him "Shad" for his tall fish stories.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Flint Rhem card?

It is card #136 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Flint Rhem with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Is the 1933 Goudey Flint Rhem #136 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
