About Bill Terry
Bill Terry broke in as a struggling teenage pitcher with the Atlanta Crackers before Standard Oil's semipro Polarines converted him to first base; John McGraw signed him to the New York Giants in 1922, and after a Toledo apprenticeship Terry became New York's regular first baseman in 1925. A graceful left-handed hitter nicknamed "Memphis Bill" for his years living and working in Memphis, Terry compiled a .341 career average over 14 seasons (1923-1936), collecting 2,193 hits, 154 home runs, and 1,078 RBI. His signature year came in 1930, when he hit .401 with 254 hits to lead the National League — the last time a National Leaguer has topped .400. McGraw handed him the managerial reins in June 1932, and Terry's defense-and-pitching philosophy, built around ace Carl Hubbell ("Terry's Meal Ticket"), lifted the Giants from the cellar to the 1933 National League pennant and a World Series triumph over the Washington Senators. Terry played and managed through 1936, then continued managing New York through 1941, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954.
