About Glenn Spencer
Glenn Edward Spencer, a right-handed pitcher, broke into the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 11, 1928. After a partial 1928 season he returned to the minors before rejoining Pittsburgh's rotation from 1930-1932, working primarily as a starter and reliever in the National League. His best season came in 1931, when he went 11-12 with a sharp 3.42 ERA across 38 appearances. During the 1933 season Spencer was dealt to the New York Giants as part of a three-team trade that sent Freddie Lindstrom to Pittsburgh, joining a Giants club managed by Bill Terry that went on to capture the National League pennant and win the 1933 World Series over the Washington Senators. Spencer made his final big-league appearance on September 24, 1933, closing out a five-year career spent entirely with Pittsburgh and New York: a 23-31 record, 4.53 ERA, and 162 strikeouts over 139 games. He continued pitching in the high minors afterward, including stints with the Rochester Red Wings and Binghamton Triplets, before retiring from professional ball. Spencer died in Binghamton, New York, in 1958 at age 53. No SABR biography or documented nickname exists for him; his card here reflects his brief but pennant-winning turn in a New York Giants uniform.
