About Heinie Sand
John Henry "Heinie" Sand, born July 3, 1897 in San Francisco, broke into pro ball with the Portland Beavers after Pacific Coast League manager Walter McCredie spotted him on local sandlots, then developed into an everyday shortstop at Salt Lake City. He reached the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1923 and held down shortstop (later also third base) for six seasons through 1928, batting .258 with 848 games played, 18 home runs and 251 RBI, peaking at a career-best .299 in 1927. Sand's lasting fame came off the stat sheet: on September 27, 1924, Giants outfielder Jimmy O'Connell offered him $500 to "go easy" against New York late in a pennant race. Sand refused and immediately told Phillies manager Art Fletcher, triggering a Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis investigation that banned O'Connell and Giants coach Cozy Dolan from baseball for life — one of the era's defining integrity scandals, with Sand publicly praised by Landis for his honesty. By the time this 1933 Goudey card was issued, Sand's playing days were winding down in the high minors: he had moved on to the International League's Baltimore Orioles, for whom he played from 1930 into 1933 before closing his career with the PCL's Mission Reds in 1934. He later returned to San Francisco and worked in his family's plumbing business until his death in 1958.
