1933 Goudey #176 John Ogden

About John Ogden
"Swarthmore Jack" Ogden, born November 5, 1897 in Ogden, Pennsylvania, signed with John McGraw's New York Giants for a $1,200 bonus in June 1918 after pitching at Swarthmore College, debuting June 22, 1918. But it was the minor leagues where the right-hander made his name: from 1920-1927 he anchored the International League's Baltimore Orioles, a powerhouse under owner Jack Dunn, winning 20 or more games six times, including 31, 28, and 27-victory seasons, and setting single-season IL marks of 18 consecutive wins and 33 complete games (1921). His 213 career International League victories still stand among the league's all-time best, and he was inducted into the IL Hall of Fame in 1952. Ogden also returned to the majors with the St. Louis Browns (1928-29) and Cincinnati Reds (1931-32), finishing with a 25-34 big-league record, 4.24 ERA, and 144 strikeouts over five seasons. His 1933 Goudey card, issued during his final playing stint with Baltimore, captures him as a minor-league institution; he went on to serve as Orioles general manager and later as a respected scout, including for the Phillies and Braves organizations.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey John Ogden card?
It is card #176 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures John Ogden with the Baltimore Orioles.
Is the 1933 Goudey John Ogden #176 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
