1933 Goudey #86 Phil Todt

About Phil Todt
Phil "Hook" Todt was a left-handed-hitting first baseman born August 9, 1901, in St. Louis, Missouri — literally on cemetery grounds, where his father worked as caretaker, a detail scouts liked to retell. After starring in the low minors at Tulsa, Columbus, and San Antonio, he reached the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1924 and held down first base there through 1930, closing his big-league run with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1931. Over parts of eight seasons he hit .258 with 57 home runs, 453 RBI, and 880 hits in 957 games, topped by a .278, 75-RBI year in 1925, and he was regarded as one of the American League's surer-handed first basemen. By the time Goudey printed its 1933 set, Todt's playing career had moved to the high minors: he was with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association, whom he also managed in 1933 after his major-league days had ended. He remains best remembered in Boston lore for the graveyard birthplace story that followed him throughout his career.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Phil Todt card?
It is card #86 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Phil Todt with the St. Paul Saints.
Is the 1933 Goudey Phil Todt #86 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
