About Frank O'Rourke
Frank O'Rourke, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, broke into professional ball as a teenager with Lawrence of the New England League in 1911 before Boston purchased his contract off Bridgeport of the Connecticut State League in 1912. Primarily a third baseman who also logged significant time at shortstop and second, he spent 14 major-league seasons with the Boston Braves, Brooklyn Robins, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and St. Louis Browns, batting .254 with 430 RBI over 1,131 games. His best year came in 1925 with Detroit, when he hit .293 with 40 doubles and 57 RBI, and in 1929 he played all 154 games at short for St. Louis. Hired in August 1931 as player-manager of the American Association's Milwaukee Brewers, he still saw the field himself that year (.304) and in 1932 (.273), guiding the club to a third-place finish. By the time this card was issued, however, he had already played his last game — in 1933 he ran the Brewers strictly from the bench, and they slipped to 67-87. O'Rourke went on to manage in the low minors through the early 1940s, then became a longtime scout for the Reds and, for more than three decades, the Yankees, signing pitchers Al Downing and Johnny Kucks among others; he worked into his 90s before retiring in 1985 as reportedly the oldest active scout in the game. He was inducted posthumously into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
