1933 Goudey #209 Dolf Luque
No team banner: this card comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design.

About Dolf Luque
Adolfo "Dolf" Luque broke in with Club Fe in Cuba in 1912, then a 22-5 season for Long Branch of the New Jersey-New York State League in 1913 drew the eye of Boston Braves manager George Stallings. After brief trials with Boston (1914-15) and stops in the minors at Jersey City, Toronto, and Louisville, the stocky 5-foot-7 right-hander found a home with the Cincinnati Reds (1918-29), later pitching for Brooklyn (1930-31) and finishing with the New York Giants (1932-35), the team pictured on this card. His signature year came in 1923, when at age 33 he went 27-8 with a league-best 1.93 ERA, 6 shutouts, and 322 innings pitched -- one of the most dominant seasons of the decade -- and he added a second ERA title in 1925, the first Reds pitcher to lead the league twice. In 1919 he became the first Latin American to pitch in a World Series, throwing scoreless relief for the champion Reds; fourteen years later, at 43, he won the pennant-clinching Game Five of the 1933 World Series for the Giants with four innings of relief. Known as "Papa Montero" after a flamboyant Afro-Cuban rumba dancer, Luque finished with 194 wins, a 3.24 ERA, and 1,130 strikeouts across 20 major-league seasons, a pioneering career that opened the door for generations of Latin American ballplayers to follow.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Dolf Luque card?
It is card #209 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Dolf Luque with the New York Giants.
Why does this card have no team banner?
It comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design - 72 cards in the set share the bannerless look.
Is the 1933 Goudey Dolf Luque #209 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
