About Sam Rice
Sam Rice (born Edgar Charles Rice, 1890, Morocco, Indiana; died 1974) broke into the majors in 1915 as a pitcher for Washington, converting to the outfield the next year after Clark Griffith acquired him. Over a 20-year career — Washington Nationals/Senators, 1915-1933, finishing with Cleveland in 1934 — the right fielder batted .322 with 2,987 hits (13 short of 3,000, the closest any player has come without reaching it), 34 home runs, 1,078 RBI, and 351 stolen bases across 2,404 games. He topped 200 hits in six seasons, including a .349, 207-hit year in 1930 at age 40. Rice starred in Washington's back-to-back World Series appearances, making three sparkling catches in the Senators' 1924 title run, and became Series lore in 1925 when he tumbled into the temporary bleachers robbing Earl Smith of a homer — for decades refusing to confirm he'd held the ball, saying only, "the umpire said I did." By 1933, when Washington won its third pennant, Rice was a part-time veteran and pinch hitter, delivering a pinch single that October. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1963.
