About Al Thomas

Born December 23, 1899, in Baltimore, Maryland, Alphonse "Tommy" Thomas was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the International League's Buffalo Bisons in 1918 while still in high school, then starred for the Baltimore Orioles from 1921-25, leading the league with 32 wins in his final minor-league season. He reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1926 and that September beat future Hall of Famer Walter Johnson, 2-1. His best big-league season came in 1927 (2.98 ERA, league-leading innings pitched), and in 1929 he led the American League with 24 complete games. Traded to Washington in mid-1932, Thomas was part of the Senators' 1933 pennant-winning club and pitched twice in relief in that year's World Series loss to the New York Giants. He finished a 12-year big-league career (1926-37, also with the Phillies, Browns, and Red Sox) with a 117-128 record, 4.11 ERA, and 736 strikeouts. After retiring as a player he managed the Baltimore Orioles (1940-49), earning 1944 Minor League Manager of the Year honors, then scouted for the Boston Red Sox for 24 years. He died in 1988.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Al Thomas card?

It is card #169 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Al Thomas with the Washington Senators.

Is the 1933 Goudey Al Thomas #169 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
