About Lefty Stewart
Walter Cleveland "Lefty" Stewart was born September 23, 1900, in Sparta, Tennessee, and died September 26, 1974, in Knoxville. The left-hander broke into the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 1921, then resurfaced with the St. Louis Browns in 1927, where he became a fixture of the rotation for six seasons. His best year came in 1930, when he went 20-12 with a 3.45 ERA (third-best in the American League) for St. Louis. Traded to the Washington Senators, Stewart was a key contributor to Washington's 1933 pennant-winning club under player-manager Joe Cronin, posting a career-best .714 winning percentage at 15-6. Cronin surprised many by choosing Stewart, rather than 22-game winner Earl Whitehill, to start Game 1 of the 1933 World Series against the New York Giants; Stewart was tagged for four runs in a bit over two innings, including a two-run homer by Mel Ott, and took the loss opposite Carl Hubbell. He closed his ten-year career (1921, 1927-35) with the Senators and Cleveland Indians, finishing 101-98 with a 4.19 ERA, 503 strikeouts, and 1,722 innings pitched across 279 games. Stewart was also a capable hitter for a pitcher, batting .204 for his career, and he is remembered in passing as one of the pitchers who surrendered a home run during Babe Ruth's record 60-homer season in 1927.
