1952 Topps #341 Hal Jeffcoat

About Hal Jeffcoat
Harold Bentley "Hal" Jeffcoat (1924-2007), a West Columbia, South Carolina native, was a decorated WWII paratrooper who saw combat in the Italian Campaign and earned a Purple Heart before turning to baseball. He entered pro ball in 1946 and, after leading the Double-A Southern Association with 218 hits and 118 RBI in 1947, debuted with the Chicago Cubs on April 20, 1948, hitting .279 as a rookie outfielder. Jeffcoat is best remembered for a rare mid-career reinvention: in 1954 the Cubs converted the right-hander from the outfield to the pitcher's mound, a switch that extended his career six more seasons. He pitched for the Cubs (through 1955), Cincinnati Redlegs/Reds (1956-1959), and St. Louis Cardinals (1959), finishing 39-37 with 25 saves as a hurler and a .248 average with 487 hits and 188 RBI as a hitter over 12 seasons. He is also remembered for beaning Brooklyn's Don Zimmer on June 23, 1956, fracturing Zimmer's cheekbone. His older brother George Jeffcoat also pitched in the majors. As card #341 in the scarce high-number series (#311-407), which was printed in far smaller quantities and heavily dumped, this Cubs issue is considerably tougher to find today than the set's low numbers.
