About John Pramesa
John Steven "Johnny" Pramesa was a right-handed catcher born August 28, 1925, in Barton, Ohio (d. September 9, 1996, Los Angeles). Standing 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, he reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, debuting April 24, 1949. His finest season came in 1950, when he hit .307 in 74 games as the Reds' second-string backstop behind Dixie Howell and earned selection to the National League's rookie All-Star team. After the 1951 season Cincinnati traded him with Bob Usher to the Chicago Cubs for Bob Borkowski and future All-Star Smoky Burgess. Pramesa's brief four-year career ended with the Cubs, his final appearance coming July 26, 1952. Over 185 big-league games he batted .268 with 141 hits, 13 home runs, and 59 RBI. This 1952 Topps card places him with Chicago in the second series; it is a regular-issue number, outside both the scarce #311-407 high-number run and the #1-80 red-back/black-back variations.
