About Don Kolloway

Don Kolloway (August 4, 1918 - June 30, 1994), a right-handed infielder from Posen, Illinois, entered pro ball at Longview, Texas in 1938 and hit .302 at Oklahoma City before debuting with the Chicago White Sox on September 16, 1940. Over 12 major-league seasons he played for the White Sox (1940-1943, 1946-1949), Detroit Tigers (1949-1952) and Philadelphia Athletics (1953), primarily at second base but also first and third. He batted .271 with 1,081 hits, 29 home runs, 393 RBI and 76 stolen bases in 1,079 games, and in 1942 led the American League with 40 doubles. On June 28, 1941 he stole four bases and homered twice in a single game against Cleveland. Nicknamed "Cab" (a play on bandleader Cab Calloway's name) and "Butch," he lost 1943-1946 to U.S. Army service in World War II. This 1952 Topps card captures him as a Tiger; after baseball he ran a Blue Island tavern.
