About Johnny Lipon
John Joseph Lipon was a right-handed shortstop born November 10, 1922, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and raised in Detroit, where he starred at Chadsey High School. Legendary Tigers scout Aloysius "Wish" Egan signed him in 1941, and after batting .359 with 35 home runs at Muskegon he debuted for Detroit on August 16, 1942, going 3-for-4. His career was interrupted by U.S. Navy service in World War II, where he served as an aviation machinist's mate before returning in 1946. Lipon was Detroit's regular shortstop for several seasons; his best year came in 1950, when he scored 104 runs and hit .293 with 63 RBI. Over nine major-league seasons with the Tigers (1942, 1946-1952), Red Sox, Browns/Orioles, and Cincinnati, he batted .259 with 690 hits, 10 home runs, and 266 RBI in 758 games. In June 1952 he was traded to Boston in the deal that sent Johnny Pesky to Detroit. After his playing days he became a career minor-league manager, winning more than 2,000 games across three decades, and served as the Cleveland Indians' interim manager in 1971 (18-41). He died August 17, 1998.
