About Steve Souchock
Steve Souchock, nicknamed "Bud," was a right-handed outfielder and first baseman born March 3, 1919, in Yatesboro, Pennsylvania. He signed into the New York Yankees organization in 1939 and starred in the minors, leading the Eastern League with a .315 average and winning MVP honors in 1942. His rise was interrupted by World War II: Souchock served in the 691st Tank Destroyer Battalion (87th Infantry Division), fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and earned the Silver Star and Bronze Star before his 1945 discharge. He debuted for the Yankees on May 25, 1946, hitting .302 in 47 games, and was part of the pennant-winning club that took the 1947 World Series, though with limited playing time. After stints with the Yankees (1946, 1948) and Chicago White Sox (1949), he found his niche as a versatile utility man with the Detroit Tigers from 1951 to 1955, hitting .302 with 13 homers in both the 1952 and 1953 seasons. On August 25, 1952, his single drove in the game's only run in Virgil Trucks' second no-hitter of the year, a 1-0 win over the Yankees. A wrist injury in 1954 ended his effectiveness, and his final game came April 15, 1955. Over eight big-league seasons he batted .255 with 50 home runs and 186 RBI, later managing and scouting for the Yankees and Tigers. This 1952 Topps card is Souchock's Topps rookie card.
