About Hoot Evers
Walter Arthur "Hoot" Evers was a right-handed outfielder who starred at the University of Illinois — where he played baseball and basketball and threw the javelin — before Tigers scout Wish Egan signed him for a $9,000 bonus in 1941. He debuted with Detroit on September 16, 1941, and after losing 1943–1945 to World War II military service, he returned to anchor the Tigers' outfield, spending most of his 12 major-league seasons in Detroit (1941, 1946–1952, 1954) with later stops for the Red Sox, Giants, Orioles, and Indians. A two-time American League All-Star (1948 and 1950), Evers enjoyed his finest year in 1950, batting .323 with 21 home runs, 103 RBI, and a league-leading 11 triples; on September 7 that season he hit for the cycle with an added triple and six RBI, and in a June 23 slugfest with the Yankees he crushed an inside-the-park homer that was the record-breaking 11th home run of the game. He earned his nickname as a boy who idolized cowboy movie actor Hoot Gibson and insisted on the name during Wild West games — and it stuck for life. Injuries eroded his production after 1950, and he finished with a .278 average, 98 home runs, and 565 RBI over 1,142 games before a long second career as a scout and player-development executive for Cleveland and Detroit. His card is a fourth-series number, printed before the scarce high-number run (#311–407, home to the famous Mickey Mantle #311) that makes late-set cards so hard to find today.
