About Granny Hamner
Granville Wilbur "Granny" Hamner was a right-handed shortstop and second baseman signed out of Richmond, Virginia by Phillies scout Ted McGrew, debuting in the majors at just 17 years old on September 14, 1944. He spent virtually his entire 17-year career (1944-1959, 1962) with the Philadelphia Phillies before brief stops with the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Athletics, batting .262 with 1,529 hits, 104 home runs, and 708 RBI. A three-time All-Star (1952-1954), Hamner was the National League's starting shortstop in the 1952 All-Star Game held on his home field at Shibe Park, and is credited as the first player to start an All-Star Game at two different positions—shortstop in 1952 and second base in 1954. He was one of the key figures on the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the young pennant-winning Phillies club, and hit a scorching .429 (6-for-14) with three extra-base hits in that World Series, a four-game Yankees sweep. Named team captain by manager Eddie Sawyer, the versatile Hamner even took the mound late in his career as a knuckleballing reliever. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and honored on the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame.
