About Jim Konstanty
Casimir James "Jim" Konstanty (1917-1976) was a right-handed relief pitcher who reached the majors relatively late after converting to the mound in 1940 and working through the minors. He debuted with the Cincinnati Reds in 1944, saw brief time with the Boston Braves (1946), then found his home with the Philadelphia Phillies (1948-1954). Leaning on a palm ball and pinpoint control rather than velocity, Konstanty authored one of history's great relief seasons in 1950: manager Eddie Sawyer used him in a then-record 74 games, and he went 16-7 with 22 saves and a 2.66 ERA to help the "Whiz Kids" win the pennant. He became the first relief pitcher ever named a league MVP and was Associated Press Athlete of the Year. Surprisingly started World Series Game 1, he held the Yankees to four hits over eight innings in a 1-0 loss. He later pitched for the Yankees (1954-1956) and Cardinals (1956). Nicknamed "Yimca" for his YMCA-instructor bearing, he finished 66-48 over 11 seasons. This card sits in the 1952 Topps second series.
