About Artis Gilmore
Artis Gilmore Sr. was a dominant 7'2" center out of Gardner-Webb Junior College and Jacksonville University, where he led the Dolphins to the 1970 NCAA title game. Drafted by the ABA's Kentucky Colonels in 1971 (and by the Bulls in the NBA draft), he was an immediate force, winning ABA Rookie of the Year and MVP in 1971-72 and leading the Colonels to the 1975 ABA championship. His pro career spanned 1971-1989 across the Colonels, Chicago Bulls (1976-82, 1987), San Antonio Spurs (1982-87)-the team on this card-and Boston Celtics. Nicknamed "The A-Train," Gilmore was an 11-time All-Star (five ABA, six NBA) known for extraordinary durability, once playing 670 consecutive games. At his 1989 retirement he was the NBA's career field-goal-percentage leader (.599, minimum 2,000 makes), leading the league four straight seasons. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.

About this card
The 1986-87 Fleer Artis Gilmore is card #37 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Artis Gilmore was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the San Antonio Spurs.
