About George Gervin
George "The Iceman" Gervin was one of pro basketball's greatest pure scorers, a 6'7" guard/forward famous for his cool, sweat-free demeanor and a signature finger-roll. After Eastern Michigan University, he turned pro in the ABA, playing for the Virginia Squires (1973-74) and then the San Antonio Spurs, whom he followed from the ABA into the NBA in 1976. Over an 18-year pro career he won four NBA scoring titles (1978, 1979, 1980, 1982), earning nine NBA All-Star selections, five All-NBA First Team nods, and a career 26.2 ppg NBA average. His 1978 title came in the closest race in league history: needing a big final game, he poured in 63 points to edge David Thompson, who had scored 73 that same day. This 1986-87 Fleer card captures Gervin in the unfamiliar uniform of the Chicago Bulls, his lone and final NBA season (1985-86) after a decade defining the Spurs. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1996 and named to the NBA's 50 Greatest Players list that same year.
