About World B. Free
Born Lloyd Bernard Free, he legally changed his name to World B. Free on December 8, 1981 - a nod to the "World" nickname a childhood friend, Herb Smith, gave him on the Brownsville, Brooklyn playgrounds for being able to "go 'round the world" with 360-degree dunks as a teenager. A 6'3" scoring guard out of Guilford College, Free was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round (23rd overall) in 1975 and played 13 NBA seasons for five franchises: the 76ers, San Diego Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers (his team on this card), and Houston Rockets. He averaged 20.3 points per game across 886 games, finished second in the NBA in scoring in 1979-80 (30.2 ppg, behind George Gervin), and made his lone All-Star team that season with San Diego. This 1986-87 Fleer card, issued during his Cavaliers stint, prints "WORLD B. FREE" - reflecting the legal name change from Lloyd Free that the nameplate now carries. He later served the 76ers as a community-relations ambassador.
