1986-87 Fleer #48 Phil Hubbard
1986-87 Fleer #48 Phil Hubbard

About Phil Hubbard
A 6'8" power forward from the University of Michigan, Phil Hubbard was a consensus second-team All-American who, as a freshman, helped the Wolverines reach the 1976 NCAA title game and won a gold medal with Team USA at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. A serious knee injury cost him his junior season, but he was still selected 15th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1979 NBA Draft. Hubbard played 10 NBA seasons (1979-1989) and 665 career games, splitting his time between the Pistons (1979-82) and Cleveland Cavaliers (1982-89) and averaging 10.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. In a notable footnote, the 1982 trade that sent him from Detroit to Cleveland also included Bill Laimbeer going the other way to the Pistons. He shows on this 1986-87 Fleer card with the Cavaliers, the team he anchored as a rugged interior role player for most of the decade before retiring in 1989.

About this card
The 1986-87 Fleer Phil Hubbard is card #48 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Phil Hubbard was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
