About Johnny Moore
Born John Brian Moore on March 3, 1958, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Moore starred at the University of Texas, where he became the Longhorns' all-time assists leader and earned first-team All-Southwest Conference honors as a senior. The Seattle SuperSonics drafted him in the second round (43rd overall) of the 1979 NBA Draft, but he made his name as the point guard of the San Antonio Spurs, where he spent nearly his entire career (1980-87 and 1989-90), with a brief stop in New Jersey in 1987-88. Moore led the entire NBA in assists in the 1981-82 season, averaging 9.6 per game, and over 520 games he posted career marks of roughly 9.4 points and 7.4 assists per game. His career was tragically derailed in 1986 when he contracted "desert fever" (a rare form of meningitis linked to coccidioidomycosis); he battled back to play three more seasons, a testament to his resilience. In 1998 the Spurs retired his No. 00, only the third number retired in franchise history. On this 1986-87 Fleer card, Moore is a common player who has become a legendary condition rarity, with top-graded copies among the scarcest in the entire set.
