About Mike Mitchell
A 6'7" small forward out of Auburn University, Mike Mitchell (1956-2011) left the Tigers as their all-time leading rebounder and one of their top scorers, earning four All-SEC selections before the Cleveland Cavaliers took him 15th overall in the 1978 NBA Draft. He played 11 NBA seasons (1978-1990), splitting his career between Cleveland and the San Antonio Spurs, and finished with 15,016 points across 759 games for a 19.8 points-per-game average. A pure mid-range scorer, Mitchell earned his lone All-Star selection in 1981 while with Cleveland and ranked among the league's top ten in scoring four times, pouring in a career-high 2,012 points that season. He was at his best in the postseason: during the 1983 Western Conference Finals against the Lakers he averaged 25.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game for the Spurs. After basketball, Mitchell settled in San Antonio and worked as a counselor for at-risk youth until his death from cancer in 2011.
