About Andy Hansen

Andrew Viggo Hansen Jr., nicknamed "Swede" (a nod given despite his Danish ancestry, per The Sporting News), was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors as a teenager. After graduating high school in 1943, the Lake Worth, Florida native turned down football scholarship offers and signed as an amateur free agent with the National League's New York Giants for $75 a month. He debuted on June 30, 1944, at age 19 and pitched nine big-league seasons for the Giants (1944-45, 1947-50) and Philadelphia Phillies (1951-53); a gap in 1946 came when he stepped away for a family illness and then served in the U.S. Army. Hansen went 23-30 with a 4.22 ERA and 188 strikeouts over 270 appearances, his finest work coming in 1948 (5-0 stretch of form with a career-best 2.97 ERA across 100 innings). His 1952 season, contemporary with this card, included a strong July of four saves. After baseball he spent 31 years with the U.S. Postal Service and was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Hall of Fame in 1988. This is his rookie card and a Series 1 issue (not part of the scarce #311-407 high-number run that made the set's Mantle famously rare), found with both black-back and red-back color variations.

  • Black Back — scarcer: First printing. Reverse printed in black ink. Scarcer, and typically carries a small premium over the red back.
  • Red Back: Second printing onward. Reverse printed in red ink. The more common of the two.
