About Howie Fox
Howie Fox was a right-handed pitcher signed by the Cincinnati Reds after starring in Oregon's semipro Cascade League, where scout George "Mickey" Shader spotted him in 1942. Classified 4F because of two dislocated vertebrae, Fox pitched through the war years in the minors and made his big-league debut for the Reds on September 17, 1944. He spent the bulk of his nine-season career (1944-1954) in Cincinnati (1944-1951) before moving to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1952 — the team on this 1952 Topps card — and finishing with the Baltimore Orioles in 1954-1955. Used as both a starter and reliever, Fox went 43-72 with a 4.33 ERA over 1,108-plus innings; his workhorse 1951 season saw him log a career-high 228 innings. His most effective year came in 1950 (11-8) after he reworked his delivery to throw purely overhand. Fox's story ended in tragedy: in October 1955, a month after his final pro season, he was stabbed to death at age 34 during an altercation at the San Antonio tavern he owned. This card sits in the set's fourth series, well before the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the iconic Mickey Mantle #311.
